More Anti-oxidants than green tea
Rooibos has also been found to be rich in anti-oxidants, flavonoids and polyphenols. Rooibos has more SOD (superoxide dismutase), a powerful anti-oxidant, than Green Tea as well as other anti-oxidants not found in other teas.
Fights free radicals in the body
The effect of free radicals (a by-product of normal cell function) in the process of aging and declining of the immune system is limited by the anti-oxidants in Rooibos.
Full of supplements the body needs
Rooibos also supplements the daily amounts of calcium, manganese and especially fluoride, needed for the development of strong teeth and bones. Rooibos contains zinc and alpha-hydroxy acid, which promote healthy skin and magnesium which is necessary
for a healthy nervous system.
Amazing medicinal qualities make it the perfect home remedy
Rooibos has been used by people suffering from irritability, headaches, disturbed sleeping patterns, insomnia, nervous tension, mild depression or hypertension.
Low in tannin - zero oxalic acid
Rooibos is low in tannin and therefore does not prohibit the absorption of iron and proteins into the body. Since Rooibos contains no oxalic acid, it can be drunk freely by people suffering from kidney stones.
Relieves allergy symptoms
Rooibos is known to benefit in the management of allergies like hay fever, asthma and eczema. Rooibos has a soothing effect on the skin, relieving itching and certain skin irritations like eczema, diaper rash and acne when directly applied to the
affected area. |
About the Rooibos Shrub
Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a delicate shrub with bright green, needle-like leaves that is native to the Cedarberg Mountains of the Western Cape. It grows about one-half to two meters tall (1½ - 5 feet), with small yellow flowers in the
spring. Rooibos thrives in the hot, dry conditions of western South Africa. Rooibos belongs to the legume family and is botanically unrelated to Camellia sinensis, the plant whose leaves are used to make black, green, and oolong teas.
This fairly drought resistant plant seeks deeply for its moisture requirements with the aid of a taproot, up to a depth of two meters below the surface depending on the soil depth, with a finely branched network of roots just below the ground surface.
Seeds can be planted between February and March, but greenhouse-raised seedlings have to wait until July or August to be planted outdoors. Harvest takes place once a year, between January and March. Leaves from a new plant can be harvested after
just 18 months, then every year after.
Like other kinds of tea, dried rooibos is graded according to its color, aroma, flavor, and cut length. Because it comes from the best growing region in the world, nearly all the rooibos produced is considered the highest grade, or "supergrade." This
grade is acceptable for export, and is currently sold in England, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Malaysia, China, Japan, and the United States.
